Since January 1, 2025, outpatient mental health therapy for NJ FamilyCare members has been covered through each member's managed care plan (NJ Behavioral Health Integration FAQ). That means a therapist who "takes Medicaid" still has to be in your specific plan's network, and coverage questions go to your plan's member services.
With the four plans above, Bluebird sessions cost $0 and need no referral or prior authorization. We still confirm your coverage before your first session, so you know where you stand before you start.
Bluebird offers therapy for adults 18 and older, for concerns such as stress and burnout, financial stress, anxiety and worry, depression, grief and loss, loneliness, major life changes, chronic illness or pain affecting your mood, relationship and family stress, and sleep problems linked to stress. You don't need a name for what you're feeling before you call.
Your first session is a chance to talk about what's going on and what you'd like to change. Your therapist will ask some questions, explain how sessions work and agree the next steps with you. You can go at your own pace.
New Jersey law requires NJ FamilyCare to cover telehealth therapy the same way it covers in-person care (P.L.2021, c.310). Sessions take place in Bluebird's secure, HIPAA-compliant client portal, and you'll set up your login when you start. Prefer not to use video? New Jersey's telehealth law also allows phone-only (audio-only) sessions, and Bluebird offers them.
For video, all you need is a phone, tablet or computer with a camera, an internet connection and a private place to talk. There's no commute, so it works the same in Bergen County as in Cape May. See how online therapy works.
Care at Bluebird is led by Aliza Sokel, LCSW, Bluebird's Clinical Director. Aliza oversees the care every client receives and also works directly with clients. NJ FamilyCare members get the same care as every other Bluebird client.
