Does Employer Insurance Cover Therapy? A New Jersey Therapist Explains

Does Employer Insurance Cover Therapy? | Bluebird Therapy

You've been thinking about therapy for a while. Maybe months. Maybe longer.

And every time you get close to reaching out, the same two questions stop you. Will my work insurance actually cover this? And will my employer find out?

I hear both of these almost every week from people with insurance through their job. They're fair questions. Health insurance is confusing, the customer service is often terrible, and nobody wants a surprise bill or an awkward moment at work.

So let's answer both, plainly, from inside a practice that works with insurance every single day.

The short answer: most job-based plans include therapy

So, does employer insurance cover therapy? For most people, yes. Most job-based health plans include mental health benefits, and therapy usually falls under them.

But "covered" doesn't tell you what you'll pay. Every plan is different. And every person on that plan can be in a different spot, depending on how much of their deductible they've already paid this year.

That means two coworkers on the exact same plan can pay two different amounts for the same session. So forget what your coworker pays, or what your cousin's plan does. What matters is your plan and your numbers.

How to check if your employer insurance covers therapy

Three things decide what you'll pay:

  • Copay. A flat amount you pay each session, like $15 or $25.

  • Deductible. What you pay out of pocket for all health services each year before your insurance starts picking up more of the cost.

  • In-network. The therapist has a contract with your insurance company.

Here's the good news. You don't have to decode any of this on your own.

When you fill out Bluebird's insurance form, we check your specific plan and tell you exactly what you'll pay, or if you'll pay anything at all. Having us check your insurance is free, and it doesn't commit you to anything.

A real example: "I didn't even know I could use it"

Recently, someone called Bluebird Therapy Center wanting to use their work insurance.
They had no idea if they even could! We ran their insurance information for them. Their cost came back as a $15 copay per weekly session. That was it.
They were so relieved. Not only about the price, but about finally having someone make the whole thing simple and tell them exactly what to do next.

What if your plan has a high deductible?

Sometimes the news isn't a $15 copay. With a high-deductible plan, you may pay the full cost of each session until you meet your deductible.

That doesn't mean therapy is off the table. It means you have a decision to make.

If you expect to hit your deductible this year anyway, using your insurance for therapy often makes sense. You're spending money you'd likely spend on another medical appointment later. And every session gets you closer to when your insurance starts paying a lot more for your medical care.

If you don't expect to hit it, or we're not in-network with your plan, you can pay out of pocket instead. Bluebird offers a sliding scale. We can also talk about sessions every other week, or shorter sessions, to make therapy more affordable.

Will my employer know I'm in therapy?

Your employer will not know what you talk about in therapy. What you say in session is confidential health information, protected by HIPAA, a federal privacy law. Your boss doesn't get access to it.

Whether your employer might know that you're going at all is a different question.
It depends. It works much the same way as any other doctor visit you use your insurance for.

What an employer can see varies from employer to employer and plan to plan. If you want to know for sure, you simply need to ask. Call the member services number on your insurance card, or check your plan documents.

So here's the bottom line. Your employer may know you're going. They may not. Either way, they won't know what you talk about. That stays between you and your therapist.

Which work insurance plans does Bluebird take?

We're in-network with many of the plans New Jersey employers use, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Oscar, UnitedHealthcare, and Wellpoint.

We're also in-network with the NYC Board of Ed insurance. That's a big help for New Jersey residents who work for New York City schools. Sessions are online, so you can meet from home, as long as you're in New Jersey during your session.

Even if your insurance company is on this list, every plan has its own details. The only way to know for sure is to check. There's no cost and no downside to finding out.

And if your situation ever changes, we also take Medicaid, NJ FamilyCare, and Medicare.

What happens after you send us your insurance

  1. You fill out our insurance form. It takes a few minutes.

  2. A real person gets back to you, usually within two business days.

  3. We tell you what your plan covers and what you'll pay, if anything. Your plan, your numbers.

  4. We make sure we're the right clinical fit. If we're not, we'll help point you to a practice or therapist who is.

As of writing this article October 2026, most new clients are able to see a therapist within about seven business days.

Why we handle the insurance part for you

Anything to do with health insurance can be extremely frustrating. It's complicated. The customer service can be awful. And big bills seem to show up out of nowhere.

We try to change that. We take care of the insurance side so you don't have to. And you'll get quick answers from real people the whole way through, from your first call to your last session.

If you've been putting this off

I know you've been waiting. You don't know what it will cost. You don't know who might find out. You don't know what happens after you reach out.

That's a lot of unknowns to carry, on top of whatever made you start thinking about therapy in the first place.

Here's what I can tell you. When you reach out to Bluebird, you'll talk to a real person. If we miss your call, a real person will call you back. We'll check your work insurance, tell you exactly what it means for you, and help you find a therapist who fits.

Start with a free 15-minute consultation call. Meet us, ask your questions, and see if we feel like the right fit. No pressure, and nothing to figure out alone.
